During his tour of duty in the U.S. Navy during the Cold War on the USS Tombigbee in the Pacific, he showcased his early musical skills playing electric guitar in a military band on base in Hawaii with other Navy personnel. Once Don retired from active service and went to work for Allstate Insurance Agency in 1962. Don would spend the next 50 years selling insurance as an independent agent for various agencies.
