Donald "Don" I. McCoy

Donald “Don” I. McCoy, age 82 of Middletown, Ohio passed away on May 12, 2023, after a brief illness.

He is survived by his beloved wife Frances Ann (Carr) McCoy, his children Julie (Joe) Schuster, Jennifer McCoy Smith, Chris McCoy (Natasha Yee), Erin (Dusty) Shook and Carrie (Levi) Pasma; grandchildren Michael, Jessica, Charlotte, Ian, Arden, Bonnie, Adney, Austin, Tyler and Ryan; great-grandchildren Autumn, Nova and Truth,  2 step-sons Anthony (Angela) Cywinski and Joseph (AnnMarie) Cywinski; many nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, and his brother Orville (Joyce) McCoy. 

He was preceded in death by his parents William Albert and Verga Mae, brothers Paul, Earl, James, John, and Cecil, and sisters Helen and Opal.

Don was born in West Carrollton, Ohio on July 18, 1940, the youngest of 9 children. He attended West Carrollton High School, graduating in 1958. During his tour of duty in the U.S. Navy during the Cold War on the USS Tombigbee in the Pacific, he showcased his early musical skills playing electric guitar in a military band on base in Hawaii with other Navy personnel.  Once Don retired from active service and went to work for Allstate Insurance Agency in 1962. Don would spend the next 50 years selling insurance as an independent agent for various agencies.

Active in his church and Bible Study, Don shared a deep passion for nursing home music ministry with his wife, Fran. Together they were active with local folk music societies and regularly traveled to music festivals to perform, charming audiences with their performances.

With Don's easygoing manner and mischievous sense of humor, he always found a way to lift peoples’ spirits. He took a true interest in others and enjoyed family get-togethers, playing music, long bike rides and spending time with his children and grandchildren. Don’s family and friends, as well as all who had the pleasure of knowing him, will deeply miss him. The family expresses their heartfelt gratitude to everyone at Atrium Medical Center for the exceptional care and support provided during Don's time there.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 20, 2023, at the Swart Funeral Home, 207 E. Central Ave., West Carrollton with Pastor Ron Dotson officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery with Military Honors conducted by the Combined Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. (1 hour prior to service) at the funeral home on Saturday.
