Obituary

Virginia M. "Ginger" (Goforth) Barna, age 97 of Miamisburg, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 19, 2025, at Oak Creek Terrace, surrounded by her loving family. She was born at home on March 26, 1927, in Wilmore, Kentucky, the daughter of the late Velma (Switzer) and Samuel Goforth.

Their tiny home was located on the Kentucky River between two cliffs. The family moved to Dayton in 1934, when Ginger was 7 years old.

While growing up, Ginger sang on stage and played the ukulele in grade school. She was quite talented. She and her sister Hazel sang a stuttering song on stage in Dayton, and they were made to quit because the kids in school started stuttering…this was a true fact.

Ginger was quite popular in grade school as well as high school. During high school she sang on stage in Miamisburg, Ohio. Back then the building was called Junior Hall, now it is called the Opera House and is still standing. Her sisters say that she has a very good singing voice.

When she was 19 years old, she and her sister were walking down 3rd Street in Dayton. On the other side of the street, she whistles at a very tall and handsome young man, and he runs across the street to meet her. They hit it off, dated for one year and then got married. She was 20 years old, and her husband Bill was only 16 years old. (He looked older for his age, so he lied to her)!!!

Life was a bit of a struggle for the two of them. They did yardwork for people to make money while living with Ginger's parents. Despite hard times, their home was always filled with lots of love and laughter!! Her husband Bill finally got a job at Frigidaire.

Ginger had her first daughter Linda at age 21 and then gave birth to Tari seven years later.

After Ginger and Bill were married, she had one-part time job at a clothing store for a short while; then after that Bill wanted her to stay at home and raise their daughters and take care of the home. They ended up buying a house in West Carrollton. Life was very good. They were married 64 years. Ginger always said that Bill was the boss, but everyone knew better.

Ginger was a Dayton Mall walker. The other mall walkers nicknamed her, the Road Runner, not many could keep up with her. Her health had been excellent throughout her life with the exception of being a colon cancer survivor, 20 years ago.

She missed her deceased husband immensely, and she had never met a stranger. Ginger was baptized Jehovah's Witness of 41 years and loved her heavenly father dearly.

Preceded in death by her husband William Michael "Bill" Barna on September 24, 2011, her sister Theresa Harmon, and by her brother Ronnie Goforth.

She is survived by her daughters Linda Pryor and husband Bruce and Tari Powell and husband Terry, her brother Samuel Goforth, her sister Hazel Wolf, 2 grandsons Joe Crouch and wife Jeani, and Ronnie Trusty and wife Tiffany, 3 great granddaughters Brooke Crouch (Brad Sellars), Alexa Hudkins and husband Ian and Taylor Crouch, 1 great grandson Anthony Langer, 4 great great grandchildren Madison Sellars, Wyatt Sellars, Maverick Trusty and Naomi Trusty as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

At Ginger's request there will be no services.  Arrangements entrusted to the Swart Funeral Home, West Carrollton.

Expressions of Sympathy, Love, and Thinking of You cards may be sent to The Family of Mrs. Virginia M. Barna, C/O Swart Funeral Home, 207 E. Central Ave., West Carrollton, Ohio 45449.
