Obituary

Richard "Rick" Lee Manning I

Rick Manning passed away, leaving behind a legacy of music and art that will forever resonate in the hearts of those who knew him.

Rick was best known as the drummer for Chalice, a band that captured the spirit of the 1980s Middletown music scene. Their success was highlighted by the release of a 45 for "Shoot for the Stars" and "Take It Away." As noted on the Metal Archives, Chalice's music "resonated with fans, making them a standout in the regional rock scene." In recent years, "Shoot for the Stars" has gained national recognition among vinyl collectors and music enthusiasts, celebrated for its vibrant energy and authentic 1980s sound (Metal Archives). Additionally, collectors on platforms like Discogs have highlighted the band's work as a rare gem in the rock genre (Discogs).

A true creative soul, Rick was also a talented painter whose works were featured in galleries, including his own for a time in Middletown, and showcased in art shows in Miamisburg. Whether behind a drum set or a canvas, Rick's passion for creation was the thread that wove through his life.

Throughout the years, Rick held a variety of roles, including police officer, pastor, security guard, auto mechanic, and owner of an auto parts business. These were chapters in a life defined by ingenuity and perseverance, but it was his artistry that left the greatest impression.

Rick's legacy as a musician and artist is the gift he leaves behind to the community and beyond. His music, his art, and his spirit will live on through the many lives he has touched.

He is deeply missed by his family and friends. In his honor, a special tribute to Rick will be held at the "Chalice Show" at the Madison Inn, 101 S Front St, Middletown, Ohio, on Friday, January 17. More details will be shared on the Chalice Band Facebook page. In lieu of flowers, there will be a donation box at the event to assist with Rick's final expenses.
