Taylor, Gloria L., age 86 of Dayton, passed away on Wednesday, December 20, 2017 at Kettering Medical Center. She was born on June 25, 1931 in Dayton, Ohio the daughter of the late Roy V. & Mary K. (Kline) Taylor. Gloria graduated from Northridge High School and was inducted into the Northridge High School Hall of Fame, she earned her B.S. in Health & Physical Education from the University of Dayton; and participated in Field Hockey & Basketball; she was also inducted to the University of Dayton Hall of Fame, and was a member of the Dayton Field Hockey Association. Gloria played club hockey for 28 years and was chosen to represent the Great Lakes Hockey Assoc. in 13 consecutive National Field Hockey tournaments. She officiated women's field hockey and basketball on the college level, and received a M.A. Degree from Ohio State University. Gloria taught in Troy High School as well as being a devoted teacher for Lebanon City Schools for 24 years. Gloria was a pioneer in starting girls' sports in Lebanon in the 1960's this included her coaching Basketball, Field Hockey, Volleyball, Tennis, Track & Field and the beginning of the intramural Girls Athletic Association; as well as being inducted into the Lebanon City Schools Hall of Fame in 1984 and Lebanon Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007. Preceded in death by her sister Mary Anne Taylor. She is survived by many cousins, and special friends Judy Conrad, Dona Sarno, Mike & Judy Marcum and Bea Harper. *****Lebanon High School Athletic Department Establishes the Gloria Taylor Memorial Scholarship
The Lebanon High School Athletic Department will be awarding a one thousand-dollar scholarship beginning in the Spring of 2019 in the memory of Gloria Taylor, a Lebanon educator and pioneering coach in female athletics. The scholarship is intended to be presented to an LHS Warrior female student-athlete, who represents the spirit and commitment Gloria had for women's athletics.
Ms. Taylor, a graduate of the Northridge High School and a member of the Polar Bears' Athletic Hall of Fame, went on to earn a B.S. of Science in Health and Physical Education from the University of Dayton where she starred in Field Hockey and Basketball for the Flyers. She earned her Master's Degree from thee Ohio State University. Following college, Gloria taught her final 24 years of a thirty-year career at Lebanon High School while continuing her Field Hockey career as a player and an official. She is a member of the University of Dayton Athletic Hall of Fame.
Gloria was the trailblazer at Lebanon and throughout Southwest Ohio in interscholastic girls' athletics. Gloria started and served as the first LHS coach in the sports of basketball, volleyball, field hockey, track and field and tennis for girls. She is a member of the District's Academic Hall of Fame (1984) and the High School's Athletic Hall of Fame (2007).
Donations to the Gloria Taylor Memorial Scholarship Fund are being accepted by the Lebanon High School Athletic Dept. (1916 Drake Rd. Lebanon, Ohio 45036). Please make checks payable to the Gloria Taylor Memorial Scholarship Fund. In order for your donation to be taxable deductible, please include a letter indicating that the donation is to be applied to the Gloria Taylor Memorial Scholarship Fund.
