Erika Anny Munzel Socks, age 90 of Dayton, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 21, 2024, at Kettering Health Network - Dayton, surrounded by her loving family.
Erika was born in Frankfurt am Maine, Germany on June 5, 1934. She lived through World War II in Germany as a young child, and recalls running to the bomb shelters with her mother.
Erika immigrated to New York City, on her own in 1959. She worked as a secretary for Lufthansa. During this time she met her husband Kenneth MacTear, who was from Boston, Mass. Together they had a daughter, named Kendra MacTear Sittler. Sadly, Kenneth died of cancer in 1964. During 1964-1967 Erika and Kendra lived between Boston, New York, and Frankfurt, Germany. Eventually they settled in New York, where Erika met and married Bruce Socks. Together they had a daughter named Christina Socks Ennis.
In 1969 the family moved to Rancho Palos Verdes, CA. During 1969 - 1977 they lived in Rancho Palos Verdes, followed by Escondido, CA. In 1978 the family settled in Dayton, Ohio, as Bruce worked for NCR.
Erika was a loving wife and mother. She always put the needs of others before herself. She raised 2 girls (Kendra and Chrissy),was grandmother to Brandon Hahn, Malia Sittler and Maile Sittler, and was a great-grandmother to Maddie, Karson and Rylann. She is predeceased by her husbands' Kenneth MacTear, and husband of over 50 years Bruce Socks. She is also predeceased by her grandson Christopher Isaac, and granddaughter Kelsey Hahn.
While in Ohio, Erika spent over 20 years working at Macy's, formerly known as Rikes, then Lazarus. In her spare time she enjoyed spending time with family, gardening and reading. She especially enjoyed mysteries by John Grisham. Erika grew up Catholic, and later became a Lutheran. She attended and supported the church for many years.
Erika became ill on and off during 2024. She entered the hospital on June 1st and passed away on June 21, 2024. Her generosity, kindness and warmth will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Mom / Nanny will forever live on in our hearts.
